We all know that bright lipsticks are in this summer… The only problem with many bold or deep colors is that they show every little dry, chapped spot on your lips, especially if they are long wearing or matte. Luckily, chapped lips have an easy fix that you can probably make from things you already have in your kitchen!
For an easy lip scrub, you can use honey, sugar, and olive oil. You can also add petroleum jelly (vaseline) if you want it to keep for about a week and have a thicker texture. To do that, you will also need a small container/sample jar to put it in.
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon petroleum jelly (optional)
All you have to do is mix ingredients together in a small bowl, then spread it onto your lips with your finger and gently rub it around to exfoliate. If you want your lips to be even softer, you can leave this on for a minute or two so the olive oil and honey have a chance to give your lips some extra moisture. After that, simply rinse off with water and apply a good lip balm or lip conditioner to keep your lips from drying out again.
I usually use this mixture every other day or so. It’s gentle enough that you can use it once a day if your lips are exceptionally chapped. If you start to feel like your lips are irritated, give them a break for a day or two.
A few good lip balms or conditioners that will keep your lips soft and kissable are:
- MAC Lip Conditioner $15 / 0.5oz for squeeze tube and pot / 0.16oz for tube
This lip conditioner comes in a roll up tube (similar to a lipstick), a pot that you can apply with fingers, or a squeeze tube (my favorite is the Viva Glam Ricky type so all of the proceeds go to the MAC AIDS fund). All MAC’s Lip Conditioners contains SPF 15. These have no taste but are lightly scented with the usual MAC vanilla scent. The type in the pot is (or was) available in four different colors too, but they aren’t showing up on the website right now so they may have been discontinued… I hope they weren’t! I will have to investigate this further!
- The Body Shop Hemp Lip Protector $8 / 0.15oz
I have about 5 tubes of this at any given time… One in my bedroom, one by my computer, one in the bathroom, one in my purse and one in my car. It’s ridiculous! It contains no SPF, so I don’t use this if I’m going to be outside much because I like to protect my lips… However, this is still an amazing lip balm. It comes in a twist up tube similar to most lip balms. It’s very moisturizing, very lightly and naturally scented, and has no taste. Although this is $8, they usually have a deal going where you can buy several at a time and get a discount.
- Korres Lip Butter $12 / 0.21oz
Korres Lip Butter comes in a little pot that you apply with your fingers. It’s very smooth and creamy and not the least bit greasy or slick feeling. Since it has shea butter in it, it really soaks into your lips and gives long lasting moisture. These have very little taste but a slight, pleasant scent that differs from formula to formula. It’s available in 7 different colors/scents, with Guava being the only colorless type. These seem to last me a very long time since a little bit of product goes a very long way.
