MAC PRO Lip Palette – 6 Editorial Reds: Photos, Swatches and Reviews

In Fall of 2012, MAC PRO released five brand new Lip Palettes containing six lipsticks each, all of which are part of the permanent line of lipsticks. In this post, I will be reviewing the 6 Editorial Reds Lip Palette. This is the perfect palette for a Hollywood glam or classic pinup look… Or if you just want to get noticed!

PRO Lip Palette - 6 Editorial Reds - Product

These palettes were certainly designed with the professional makeup artist in mind… They save space in a kit or makeup bag and are convenient to use on set. You don’t have to dig around in your lipstick bag or search through tons of lipsticks in your palette to find the color you’re looking for… Each palette is arranged by color family, so you can just grab one if you need a red lip or another for a neutral brown look. These lipsticks can be used alone or mixed on a palette to create something new and unique.

As an every day consumer, you may or may not be head over heels in love with these… It’s nice to be able to grab one little palette of lipsticks and have all your pinks or reds or oranges right in front of you. The only real inconvenience I can see is that you have to apply these with a brush, but that’s usually a better, more controllable way to apply lipstick anyway! MAC makes great lip brushes that are easy to travel with, so you can toss one into you bag along with your PRO Lip Palette… You can choose between the 316 Lip Brush with a normal, removable cap, or the 318 Retractable Lip Brush that has an open end, but retracts and expands when you push or pull on it (so you can’t lose the cap, but it stays covered in your bag).

MAC Lipsticks typically wear for 4-6 hours… Longer with Prep + Prime Lip and a liner of some sort. They apply smoothly and have good color payoff. MAC Lipsticks have a faint vanilla scent and no taste.

MAC PRO Lip Palettes are available now and are part of MAC PRO’s permanent product line. You can buy them at any MAC PRO store or online at www.maccosmetics.com. They sell for $40 and contain a total of 6g / 0.21oz of product.

Russian Red

Russian Red

Russian Red (Matte):   This is an “intense blueish red” with a Matte finish. It’s a bold, cool toned red with a matte finish and a satiny smooth texture. Although this is a Matte, it has a slight sheen to it for the first hour or two it’s worn. It applies easily and gives completely opaque coverage. Tip: If you want your teeth to look whiter, use a blue-based red like this lipstick! A few liners that you could use with this are Cherry Lip Pencil for a perfect match, Brick Lip Pencil if you want a little extra contrast, or Nightmoth Lip Pencil if you realy want it to look vampy!

Lady Danger

Lady Danger (Matte):   Lady Danger is a “vivid bright coral-red” and a Matte finish. It’s a bright, warm, red with strong orange/coral undertones. Like Russian Red, this matte finish has a satin like sheen to it that lasts for the first hour or two that you have it on. This lipstick gives amazing color payoff and opaque coverage. The perfect Lip Pencil to use with this is Redd. You could also use What A Blast! Pro Longwear Lip Pencil if you want to play up the orange tones in Lady Danger. Kiss Me Quick is a good Pro Longwear Lip Pencil to use with this lipstick as well… It’s slightly darker though.

Dare You (Cremesheen):   Dare You is a “deep brown red” with a Cremesheen finish. It’s a medium-dark, warm red with wine and slightly brownish undertones. Cremesheens have a shine that lasts throughout the time the lipstick is worn, as well as a silky texture. Dare You has wonderful color payoff and 90% opaque coverage. This lipsticks looks nice with a liner like Half-Red, Brick, or Burgundy Lip Pencil.

Ruby Woo

Ruby Woo on Lips

Ruby Woo (Matte):   Ruby Woo is a “vivid blueish-red” with a Retro Matte finish. Retro Matte’s feel slightly drier than other Matte lipsticks and have a more velvety appearance and texture. I recommend a primer like MAC’s Prep + Prime Lip under this lipstick to make it look it’s best. It’s a bright, cool toned red that’s flattering on most skintones and will make your teeth look whiter. Ruby Woo is super pigmented and gives 100% opaque coverage with little product applied. Cherry Lip Pencil is a perfect match for Ruby Woo. Like Russian Red, you can also use Brick for more contrast or Nightmoth to vamp it up.

MAC Red (Satin):   MAC Red is also a “vivid blueish-red”, but with a Satin Finish. It’s a bold, cool toned red with a satiny sheen that lasts the majority of the time that it’s worn. It feels and looks smooth, has great color payoff, and offers totally opaque coverage. A great Lip Pencil to use with this is Cherry Lip Pencil. You can also use Brick, Burgundy, Currant, or Nightmoth Lip Pencils.

On Hold (Cremesheen):   On Hold is a “mid-tone yellow raspberry” with a Cremesheen finish. It’s medium, warm, yellow toned berry red with a warm shine to it. It feels smooth and glides on easily, giving nearly opaque coverage and decent color payoff. On Hold looks great when worn with a Lip Pencils like Beet (to play up the pinkish-red tones), or Half-Red (for a close match).
