MAC Fashion Sets – Lipsticks: Photos, Swatches and Reviews

MAC Fashion Sets are sets of coordinating Lipsticks, Lipglasses, Lip Pencils, Eye Shadows, and Nail Lacquers that share the same name and color. They’re all unique, bright, bold colors that are perfect for Spring and Summer!

I feel like recently, MAC has really improved on the formula for Matte Lipsticks so I’m happy to see that all of the Lipsticks in the Fashion Sets collection are Matte. For the most part, these have a creamy texture, amazing color payoff and coverage and a slight sheen that fades after about the first hour of wear. As with other MAC Matte Lipsticks, I get roughly 6 hours of wear.

All of these Lipsticks are limited edition. Fashion Sets are available online now at www.maccosmetics.com and will be for sale at MAC stores and counters on Thursday, April 4th. Each one of these lipsticks sells for the usual $15 and contains 3 g / 0.1 US oz of product. These Lipsticks have the classic, subtle MAC vanilla scent but no taste. As far as I know, these are already sold out online but there’s a good chance that MAC will replenish stock so keep checking back! Otherwise, be sure to get to your local counter or store early or see if they can put these on hold for you.

Ablaze Lipstick

Ablaze (Matte):   Ablaze Lipstick is a “bright apricot cream” with a Matte finish. It’s a medium-dark, rich, warm, pinkish coral with a matte texture that has a soft sheen to it at first, though the sheen begins to fade after the first hour or two of wear.

Like other Matte finish lipsticks from MAC, I got nearly 6 hours of wear with Ablaze. It gave me completely opaque coverage and great color payoff with very little product applied. This lipstick glided on smoothly, even though it’s a Matte, and didn’t feel drying.

The most similar lipstick I can think of would be MAC’s Watch Me Simmer, from Shop MAC, Cook MAC that came out last spring/summer… Watch Me Simmer is more pink, not as bright, and has an Amplified finish which is creamier and has more of a sheen.

Embrace Me Lipstick

Embrace Me (Matte):   This lipstick is a “bright fuchsia cream” with a Matte finish. It’s a bright, medium-dark, hot pink fuchsia with a cool, blue undertone. On my lips it appears cooler toned than it is in the tube. Like many other recent Matte finish Lipsticks from MAC, this has a slight sheen that fades after about the first hour of wear, although it’s not as much of a sheen as the other Matte Lipsticks in this collection.

Embrace Me wore for a solid 6 hours on me and left a stain for over another hour after I removed it! It has totally opaque coverage and wonderful color payoff. The texture is slightly drier than the other Fashion Sets Lipsticks so it didn’t apply as smoothly as the rest of them did. That said, I didn’t find Embrace Me to be drying to my lips at all.

There are several MAC Lipsticks similar to Embrace Me, but none are a perfect dupe… The closest ones would be Daddy’s Little Girl, from the recent Archie’s Girls collection, but it’s lighter and seems to have more purple in it as well as a Satin finish, so it’s much shinier. Dear Diary Pro Longwear Lipcreme Lipstick, from the Beth Ditto collection, is nearly a perfect match but seems a little brighter and cooler. Pink Pigeon, from the Strength and Iris Apfel collections, is darker but more neon and has more sheen to it. If you missed out on any of those and can’t get your paws on Embrace Me, there is always Candy Yum Yum, which is permanent so it’s available at all times… However, it’s a bit lighter, cooler, and has more of a neon look.

Heroine Lipstick

Heroine (Matte):   Heroine Lipstick is described as a “bright violet/purple” with a Matte finish. It’s a bold medium-dark, warm toned purple. Even though it’s a Matte finish Lipstick, it has a soft sheen to it that lasts a little over an hour after it’s applied. If this lipstick looks familiar to you, it’s because it was also released around this time last year with the Reel Sexy collection.

Heroine wears for a little over 6 hours on me and like Embrace Me, leaves a bit of a stain even after it’s worn off or has been removed. It gives opaque coverage and top notch color payoff. Heroine feels soft and glides on easily without feeling the least bit dry.

If you’re looking for a dupe of Heroine, the closest I can think of would be MAC’s Violetta, which is permanent at PRO stores and online…However, Violetta is considerably more iridescent and shimmery. Other than that, the color is very similar. Strong Woman from the Strength collection is another nice MAC purple, but it’s much darker and more blue based. Seductive Intent Mattene Lipstick from the Taste Temptation collection is also similar but pinker and brighter. Seductive Intent also has a considerably creamier texture and more of a sheen.

Silly Lipstick

Silly (Matte):   Silly is a “bright cream pink” with a Matte finish. It’s an intense, medium, nearly neon pink that’s almost neutral but looks slightly cool toned once it’s applied. It looks warmer in the tube and when swatched. Like the other Fashion Sets Lipsticks, Silly has a slight sheen at first but it faded quickly on me, turning into a true Matte finish in less than an hour.

I got totally opaque coverage and awesome color payoff with Silly. It felt especially creamy and applied evenly without feeling dry at all. This Lipstick gave me just less than 6 hours of wear before it began to fade.

Silly is a unique Lipstick and doesn’t have a dupe that’s all that close to it… Candy Yum Yum is a little darker but is much more cool toned. Pink Nouveau is also more of a blue based pink and has a considerable amount of sheen because it has a Satin finish.
