MAC Retro Matte – Pro Longwear Lip Pencils: Photos, Swatches and Reviews

Part of MAC’s Retro Matte collection, which was released just yesterday, is some brand new additions to their lineup of Pro Longwear Lip Pencils. These are all brighter types of colors, which was much needed in the Pro Longwear formula! All but one of them is permanent and hopefully the single limited edition will stick around if enough people ask it to. Three of these are already permanent and are just being repromoted because they work well with the lipsticks also released with this collection.

RM Pro Longwear Lip Pencils

Pro Longwear Lip Pencils are “A new generation of longwearing lip pencil technology. Glides on fluidly and adheres instantly. Defines the lips with an instant release of rich, saturated colour. Pro-longs the hours between re-application. Transfer proof.”

These are all highly pigmented lip pencils that are surprisingly creamy for a long wearing formula, gliding on without any tugging or pulling at the lips. Once these set, they feel a bit more dry but won’t budge or transfer, wearing for around 6-8 hours. The brighter colors also leave a soft stain behind even after fading, so they’re great for layering under lipsticks as well as using them as a basic kind of liner. If you layer these and fill in the whole lip, you may want to apply a primer like Prep + Prime Lip first so they don’t emphasize any dry or chapped areas on your lips, which they rarely do, but it will also make them wear longer and apply more smoothly!

All of these Pro Longwear Lip Pencils are permanent, with the exception of the limited edition color, Fashion Boost, which I hope will end up sticking around! These were released online at www.maccosmetics.com last week and in stores and at counters yesterday, Thursday September 12th. Pro Longwear Lip Pencils contain 1.2 g / 0.04 US oz of product and sell for $19.50.

TIP:   Due to the dry, yet creamy formula of these lip pencils, make sure you get a good sharpener to use with them… Using the cheap drugstore kind can lead to unwanted breakage and wasting your pencil! I suggest the ones from MAC, Benefit, or NARS.

Dynamo

Dynamo

Dynamo:   This is one of the new, permanent colors and is described as an “intense pink cream”. It’s a medium-dark, hot creamy pink with some soft coral-ish undertones. It looks the same on the lips as it does in the stick, giving great coverage and color payoff. It works well with most warm toned bright pink, soft reddish pinks, corals, or coral-pink lipsticks and glosses.

Fashion Boost

Fashion Boost

Fashion Boost:   This is a brand new “bright purple cream” and is, unfortunately, the only limited edition Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in this collection… Why do they ALWAYS do that with the purples?! GRR!! It’s a bright, medium-dark, purple-magenta with some warm, pinkish undertones. It’s a soft, creamy type of finish but still gives amazing color payoff and perfectly opaque coverage. This liner works well with nearly any purple, fuchsia, magenta, or cool toned bright pink lip.

High Energy

High Energy

High Energy:   High Energy is a “bright orange red cream” that is new and will remain in the permanent lineup of MAC’s Pro Longwear Lip Pencils. It’s a very bright, medium-dark, warm, orange-red. Like the other lip pencils in this collection, I got great color payoff and coverage. You can use this liner with any medium to medium-dark orange, yellow/orange based red, or deep coral lipstick or gloss.

In Anticipation Please excuse how hideous it looks... the cheap sharpener I used sort of ate it up!

In Anticipation:   This is one of the existing permanent Pro Longwear Lip Pencils that’s being repromoted with the Retro Matte collection. It’s described as a “soft yellow pink”… It’s a bright, medium, warm toned pink that gives absolutely opaque coverage and wonderful color payoff. This works well with most medium, neutral to warm pinks, as well as pinkish-nudes if you want to brighten them up a bit.

More to Love

More to Love

More to Love:   This is an “intense bluish pink” and is one of the existing permanent pencils being repromoted. It’s a medium-dark, bright, slightly cool toned fuchsia, which once applied, can turn more neutral to warm, depending on your own lip color. It gives intense color payoff and full coverage. This works really well with any bold pink, cool toned reddish pink, or fuchsia lipstick or gloss.

Shock Value

Shock Value

Shock Value:   This lip pencil is a “bright pink cream” and is one of the new, permanent Pro Longwear Lip Pencils… It’s a very bright, medium, cool/blue toned pink that looks a little darker and even more cool toned/slightly magenta once applied. The color payoff and coverage were both fantastic, but this pencil did feel a little more dry than some of the others in this collection. This looks really good with any bright, cool toned pink lipstick or gloss.

Staunchly Stylish

Staunchly Stylish

Staunchly Stylish:   Staunchly Stylish is a “pinky beige” that is already part of MAC’s permanent range of Pro Longwear Lip Pencils. It’s a medium, neutral, slightly pinkish brown/nude. It’s kind of one of those you-lips-but-better type of colors. It gives great color payoff and coverage, and as you can see from the photo, has a soft sheen to it so it doesn’t look totally matte until it sets. Staunchly Stylish is a good liner to use with any medium nude-ish pink, nude, brown, or any kind of neutral lip.

Trust in Red

Trust in Red

Trust in Red:   This new and permanent Pro Longwear Lip Pencil is a “bright cool red cream”… It’s a medium-dark, cool toned, blue based red that’s not as bright once applied as it is in the stick… It actually looks a bit darker on the lips too. The texture feels a little dry (and looks that way in the photo as well), but it doesn’t tug on the lips when you put it on or make application uncomfortable. It gave me totally opaque coverage and great color payoff. Since it’s a true, cool toned red, you can use this with nearly any cool toned red lip!

  2. Hi Lesley, do you think “In Anticipation” would work with “Kinda Sexy”? I’m trying to find a matching lipliner …

  3. I need to pick up a couple of pencils myself 🙂
