MAC Divine Night – Lipsticks: Photos, Swatches and Reviews

It’s holiday time again at MAC! The Divine Night colour collection was released online early last week and in store last Thursday… This year I feel like they gave us quite a bit of variation so you’ll have no trouble finding something you like from this collection, especially with the lip products!

For all but one lipstick, there’s a Cremesheen glass that goes with it, which is nice…  I apologize, but I only purchased four of five lipsticks from this collection because I have several things similar to You’ve Got It Lipstick.

Another wonderful thing about this collection is that they kept it classy… No glitter and sparkles and crazy packaging… The colour collection is all in sleek, matte black packaging with gold accents. Even the bags/kits that come out today are really pretty with black, gold and white packaging and bags that are the same color scheme and cute enough to be used as a little clutch! Good job, MAC… Please keep giving us classy packaging… People seem to be loving it with these past few collections!

MAC Lipsticks are highly pigmented, though the amount of color payoff, coverage, shine, and shimmer differs between each finish. There is variation between finishes with this collection, so I’ll be specific with each review. For the most part, MAC Lipsticks last between 4-6 hours before fading occurs. With drier textures, I recommend using Prep + Prime Lip first to smooth out your lips and hide any chapped areas. Prep + Prime Lip will also increase the wear time of any lipstick. Of course you may want to use a liner too, which will not only define the lip and add contrast if you like, it will also keep the lipstick in place longer, preventing smudging or feathering outside the natural lip line.

These lipsticks are limited edition and are available now online at www.maccosmetics.com as well as at stores and counters (assuming they’re still in stock, which they may not be online at the moment). They sell for $16.50 as opposed to the usual $15, due to the special packaging, but they contain the usual 3 g / 0.1 US oz of product. Like other MAC Lipsticks, these have a faint vanilla scent but no flavor.

Exclusive Event

Exclusive Event:   This lipsticks is a “taupe brown” with a Satin finish… It’s a medium, cool toned grayish, taupey nude that has a very soft, natural type of sheen. It felt incredibly creamy and gave me totally opaque coverage with very little product applied. Color payoff was great and I got a solid 6 hours of wear with Exclusive Event (with a liner, of course). Even though this color is significantly cool toned, the creepy, cool nudes are definitely on trend right now so this is suitable for all skin tones as long as it’s something that’s up your alley!

This is the only Lipstick in this collection that didn’t come out with a matching Cremesheen Glass to layer over it, but You’ve Got It works perfectly! I actually like it better with Exclusive Event than with the lipstick it’s supposed to go with.

Liners:   I suggest cooler toned neutrals… Stone Lip Pencil looks perfect and brings out the gray tones of this lipstick. You can also try Lip Pencils like Stripdown or Chestnut, which is darker, but may look better on darker skintones.

Dupes:   If you weren’t lucky enough to get Nude Lipstick from the most recent RiRi Hearts MAC collection, Exclusive Event is close! And if you got Nude but missed out on Exclusive Event, don’t worry… They’re VERY similar. The only difference is that Nude is slightly warmer and less gray and a bit darker. Other than that, I can’t think of many dupes… Taupe is much warmer, has more rose/mauve undertones and is Matte.

Flair for Finery

Flair for Finery:   This lipstick is described as a “cool pink/nude” and has a Lustre finish… It’s a slightly cool toned, light pinky nude with a soft sheen. Since it’s a Lustre, it is somewhat sheer, so it won’t give you 100% opaque coverage. Also, because the slight sheerness, the natural color of lips tends to make this look more pink on the lips than it does in the tube… Other than that I consider the color payoff to be great! Flair for Finery applied smoothly and didn’t feel dry, as some of the more shimmery type of Lustre finish lipsticks do. With this lipstick, as with most Lustres, I only got about 3 hours of wear before I noticed fading. I do find that this lipstick can make anyone darker than a medium-dark skintone look a bit washed out, so if you are any deeper toned than that, you may want to try a darker liner to blend it with for more contrast.

Liners:   You can use any type of neutral or pinky color with this, depending on what type of undertones you prefer to bring out. I like Subculture, Dervish, or In Synch Lip Pencil with this lipstick.

Dupes:   Hmm… I’m trying to think of a permanent dupe for this but it’s hard! Perhaps Creme Cup? That would be more pigmented and opaque, though. You’re Perfect Already Pro Longwear Lipcreme Lipstick from the Beth Ditto collection is actually very similar, but that came out quite some time ago and may not be available at most locations any more. Beauty lipstick from the Glamour Daze holiday collection from last year is also very close.

Prepare for Pleasure

Prepare for Pleasure:   Prepare for Pleasure is a “clean magenta red” with a Cremesheen finish… It’s a  medium-dark, bright, cool toned, pinkish red with a beautiful almost golden sheen. It was almost opaque coverage, but not quite. On the other hand, color payoff was fantastic and this glided on easily with a creamy texture. Prepare for Pleasure gave me about 4 hours of wear before fading. I love this red because it’s flattering on everyone of all ages! This is actually my first red that’s not a Matte and I really like it!

Liners:   I naturally grabbed Cherry Lip Pencil to use with this lipstick, which worked well. You could also use Trust In Red Pro Longwear Lip Pencil to bring out the more pinky-red tones.

Dupes:   Relentlessly Red is very close in color, but is a Retro Matte so the finish and coverage are totally different! You could also try Cockney or MAC Red if you like a red with a good sheen and can’t get your hands on Prepare for Pleasure.

Private Party:   This is a “dirty plum mauve” with a Satin Finish… It’s a medium-dark, cool toned plum with mauve/pink undertones and a gorgeous satiny sheen. I got full coverage easily with this lipstick. It’s incredibly pigmented and goes on smoothly with a creamy texture. Color payoff was accurate to the tube but may read slightly more pink if you have naturally pigmented lips. Private Party gave me a little over 4 hours of wear before it began to fade.

Liners:   I like Plum of Half-Red Lip Pencils with this lipstick, although you can make it a little more vampy and add some contrast if you use a Lip Pencil like Vino, Currant, or Nightmoth… Those would be especially flattering on very fair or deeper skintones!

Dupes:   Craving is the closest dupe I can think of that’s permanent, though it’s slightly more pink.

These lipsticks are such stunners, love the gold details and the shades are perfect for the holiday season… I need to get my hands on these! x

  2. That Plum is gorgeous. I’ve been looking for a nice plum for the season, this may be it, providing it is still available.
