MAC – Playland Lipglasses: Photos, Swatches and Reviews

Playland is one of MAC’s more recent and fun collections that’s full of bright, intense colors that are perfect for Summer! It came out several weeks ago, so I’m a little late on this, but I didn’t even purchase my products from this collection until last week! Unfortunately I only have three of the five Lipglasses to review, but they’re the best out of this collection anyway 😉

MAC Lipglasses are highly pigmented with quite a bit of shine. The three in this review all have creamy finishes with no shimmer and are nearly opaque. MAC’s Lipglass formula is not a runny type of gloss by any means… It’s quite sticky/tacky, but thins and smooths out once the product warms up on the lips. It’s applies easily with the spongey doe foot applicator, though may take a few swipes back and forth to even out and get full coverage (like I said, the product has to warm up to even out).  I typically get around 4 hours of wear time with MAC Lipglasses before I have to touch up. If you want to extend the wear time, you can apply these over MAC’s Prep + Prime Lip, which will also help keep these creamy colors from settling into the lines of your lips. Using a liner first will also help keep these Lipglasses on longer!

MAC’s Playland collection was released on April 17th and is limited edition… I know that some of these are still available at counters and stores and online at www.maccosmetics.com, though. These contain the usual 4.8 g / 0.17 US oz of product and sell for $15. They have a very light vanilla scent but no taste.

Carousel:   This Lipglass is a “creamy pink” with a cream finish… It’s a bright, medium, slightly cool toned (though it looks warmer in the tube), pink with an almost milky cream type of finish. The color payoff is great and gives nearly opaque coverage. I didn’t find that this settled into the lines of my lips much, if at all, which was a nice surprise considering how pigmented and milky it is. It has the typically tacky, somewhat thicker Lipglass texture but warmed up and felt very smooth once it warmed up on my lips. I got about 4 hours of wear before a touchup was necessary.

Lipsticks & Liners:   If you’d like to layer this over a lipstick, it works well with anything from nudes (to brighten them up) all the way to bright pinks… To be more specific, it looks great when layered over Sweet Experience (to darken and turn it more pink) and Happy-Go-Lucky (to lighten and brighten) Lipsticks also from the Playland collection. If you only want to use a liner with this, I suggest More To Love or In Anticipation Pro Longwear Lip Pencils, Embrace Me Lip Pencil (limited edition), or Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil, which was released with the Playland collection but is always available online or at a MAC PRO store location.

Dupes:   Saint Germain Lipglass is close, but cooler toned and lighter. Long Love Love Pro Longwear Lipglass is also similar, but it’s also a little lighter and cooler toned.

Lots of Laughs

Lots of Laughs

Lots of Laughs

Lots of Laughs:   Lots of Laughs is a “creamy peach” with a cream finish… It’s a light-medium, warmed toned peach with some cooler pink undertones, which make this show up a little more cool toned on the lips that it is in the tube. It has quite a milky cream finish to it, which can make this settle into the lined of the lips a bit if it’s used without something like Prep + Prime Lip underneath. Color payoff was good, but since I have fairly pigmented lips anyway, the semi-sheer opacity make this turn more pink on me than peach. It felt creamy and tacky/sticky, which is typical, and gave me slightly less than 4 hours of wear before I needed to reapply or touch up.

Lipsticks & Liners:   This Lipglass is versatile, so it can be layered over many different colors of lipsticks from nudes to pinks to peaches or corals… My favorite lipsticks to layer it over from the Playland collection is Sweet Experience, but you can also try it over Toying Around to lighten and brighten it. For a liner, I would suggest Lasting Sensation Lip Pencil to bring out the more coral/peachy tones.

Dupes:   Pink Lemonade Lipglass is in the same color family but is darker and more coral. Razzledazzler Lipglass is pretty close, but not as bright. Imperial Light Cremesheen Glass is also close, but darker, more coral and warmer, and has a golden pearl to it.

Pure SIlliness

Pure Silliness

Pure Silliness:   Pure Silliness is described as a “creamy lilac” with a cream finish, but I don’t see so much of the lilac myself… To me, this is a medium, bold, cool toned pink with some purple/lilac undertones. It has a creamy, somewhat milky finish that only settled into the lines of my lips a tiny bit without Prep + Prime Lip. Out of these three Lipglasses, Pure Silliness seems to be the one with the most shine. The color payoff was great, though it’s not completely opaque. It’s a bit stickier than the other two Lipglasses I’m reviewing from this collection, but that added a bit of wear time! I got over 4 hours of wear before I needed to touch up at all.

Lipsticks & Liners:   This Lipglass looks great when layered over Happy-Go-Lucky lipstick, also from the Playland collection, though it will work over any bold pink, or even softer pinks if you want to give them a little boost of brightness. For liners, I would go with the same three as I mentioned with Carousel… More to Love Pro Longwear Lip Pencil, Embrace Me Lip Pencil (limited edition), or Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil.

Dupes:   Saint Germain Lipglass is lighter. Pink Nouveau Lipglass is closer, but is warmer toned.
