MAC Playland – Lipsticks: Photos, Swatches and Reviews

MAC’s Playland collection is all about bright colors and these Lipsticks are no exception!! I’m only review 5 of the 6 since i couldn’t get my hands on Playland, the golden lipstick and namesake of this collection. This collection was released nearly a month ago, on Thursday, April 17th, but there are still some things in stock at some stores, counters, and online… It’s definitely worth looking for if you haven’t seen it yet! These colors are ideal for summer!

MAC Lipsticks are highly pigmented, though the amount of color payoff, coverage, shine, and shimmer differs between each finish. There is variation between finishes with this collection, so I’ll be specific with each review. For the most part, MAC Lipsticks last between 4-6 hours before fading occurs. With drier textures, I recommend using Prep + Prime Lip first to smooth out your lips and hide any chapped areas. Prep + Prime Lip will also increase the wear time of any lipstick. Of course you may want to use a liner too, which will not only define the lip and add contrast if you like, it will also keep the lipstick in place longer, preventing smudging or feathering outside the natural lip line.

The Playland collection is limited edition and available now, what stock is left anyway, since it came out on Thursday, April 17th. You can get these at any MAC store, counter, or online at www.maccosmetics.com The Lipsticks contain the usual 3 g / 0.1 US oz of product and sell for $16 (yes, all lipsticks cost this much now… They went up a dollar not long ago). These have the signature, subtle vanilla scent but no flavor.

Happy-Go-Lucky

Happy-Go-Lucky

Happy-Go-Lucky:   This is a “hot pink” with an Amplified finish… It’s a bright, medium-dark hot pink with some cooler, magenta type undertones, which show up more on the lips than they do in the tube. Color payoff is fantastic, as well as coverage… This was super bright and gave total opacity. The texture is creamy and smooth to apply, which is typical with Amplified Lipsticks. It has quite a bit of shine, but that seems to dull down after about the first hour of wear. I got a solid 5-6 hours of wear with Happy-Go-Lucky before I needed to touch up.

Liners & Glosses:   The perfect liner for this is Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil, which was released with Playland, but is also available at MAC Pro. You can also use More To Love Pro Longwear Lip Pencil, or Embrace Me Lip Pencil if you have that (it was limited edition). My favorite gloss to wear over this lipstick is Pure Silliness Lipglass, also from Playland… You can use any type of magenta or cool toned bright pink, though, or ever something less bright and more sheer, perhaps like a Dazzleglass.

Dupes:   Candy Yum Yum is actually a hint darker and more warm toned… Pink Pigeon is also close, but deeper, and both of those are Mattes. Girl About Town is darker and more purple based, though it is the same Amplified texture.

Head in the Clouds

Head in the Clouds
(sorry for the bad quality, I had to use it at work before photographing it!)

Head in The Clouds

Head in the Clouds:   This is a “red with pearl” and has a Frost finish… It’s a medium-dark, bold red with warm undertones and a warm, golden frosty pearl. The color payoff was true to the color in the tube, though it wasn’t completely opaque, but close! The texture is smooth, but due to the micro-shimmer particles and Frost finish, it’s not as smooth as the other lipsticks in this collection. I got a little over 4 hours of wear before Head in the Clouds began to fade.

Liner & Glosses:   Kiss Me Quick Pro Longwear Lip Pencil is perfect with this lipstick! You can also they Cherry Lip Pencil, or a darker red if you want a more ombre look. As far as glosses go, you can go any red, really! I actually like Venetian or Instant Gold Lustreglass over this.

Dupes:   MAC’s own Viva Glam Rihanna is SUPER close, but a little darker and more pink… Other than that, you could try Cockney, but it’s lighter and more sheer.

Red Balloon

Red Balloon

Red Balloon

Red Balloon:   Red Balloon is described as a “hot fuchsia” and has an Amplified finish… It’s a bold, medium-dark pink with cooler, reddish undertones and a hint of a sheen that tones down after about an hour of wear. Color payoff is nearly the same as in the tube, perhaps a bit less bright and a little more cool toned, though. Opacity was great and gave me full coverage. The texture is very smooth and glides on easily, wearing for over 5 hours before requiring a touch-up.

Liners & Glosses:   Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil works well with this Lipstick, as well as More to Love Pro Longwear Lip Pencil… You can even use Beet or Cherry Lip Pencils (Cherry will bring out the red more). If you’d like to brighten this lipstick with a Lipglass from Playland, you can use Pure Silliness or Carousel (which will lighten it a bit).

Dupes:   I can’t really think of any permanent dupes for this… The closest thing I can come up with is Pleasurebomb from the RiRi Holiday collection, but it’s a Matte.

Sweet Experience

Sweet Experience

Sweet Experience

Sweet Experience

Sweet Experience:   This lipstick is described as a “bright pink” and has an Amplified finish… It’s a light to medium, bright, almost milky type of pink with warm, somewhat coral/yellow undertones. The finish doesn’t have so much shine as the other Amplifieds in this collection do, but it’s still one of my favorites. The color payoff seems lighter on the lips than in the tube, while the coverage is totally opaque. Texture was creamy, yet not as silky as the shinier Amplified lipsticks in the Playland collection. I got over 5 hours of wear before I needed to touch up.

Liners and Glosses:   Lasting Sensation Lip Pencil will look pretty and bring out the more yellow-pink/coral tones in this lipstick. You can also use In Anticipation Pro Longwear Lip Pencil since it’s a medium, yellow based pink. Depending on whether you want to bring out the pink or the coral tones, you can use either Carousel or Lots of Laughs Lipglasses with this Lipstick, which both came out with the Playland collection.

Dupes:   I can’t think of any dupes for this… Anything that’s close in color has a totally different texture that throws it off!

Toying Around

Toying Around

Toying Around

Toying Around

Toying Around:   Toying Around is a “hot coral pink” with an Amplified finish… It’s a vibrant, medium, warm toned pink with definite coral undertones. It has some shine, but that fades within an hour or two of application. Color payoff is great, though a bit lighter than it looks in the tube. Coverage is full and opaque. Toying Around applied very smoothly and gave me 5-6 hours of wear.

Liners & Glosses:   You can use a lot of different liners with this, depending on the color you wish to pick up… Lasting Sensation or Cherry Lip Pencils work well, or you can do Dynamo Pro Longwear Lip Pencil. For a gloss, Lots of Laughs from Playland is nice, but will lighten this lipstick a bit… If you want one close to the actual lipstick, I suggest Live It Up, also from Playland.

Dupes:   The closest dupe I can think of is Elegant Accent Mineralize Lipstick, but it’s less coral and a hint more pink.
