Collection Catch Up – MAC Maleficent – True Love’s Kiss Lipstick: Photos, Swatches and Review

This review is over the lipstick from MAC’s Maleficent collection, which is a collaboration they did with Disney for the new Maleficent movie! The coolest part about this collection is that most of them are actually products that were used on Angelina Jolie in the movie, so you can take a little piece of Disney magic home with you when you get the makeup from this collection! Since this was released about a month ago, quantities of this particular lipstick are super limited and may not be available at your closest MAC location, but it’s worth calling around for if you want to put out the effort! If not, hopefully I can help you find a dupe that you love just as much as this lipstick!

MAC Lipsticks are highly pigmented, though the amount of color payoff, coverage, shine, and shimmer differs between each finish. This lipstick has an Amplified finish, which means it has intense color and a creamy texture with a subtle sheen. Amplified lipsticks typically wear 4-5 hours before touchups are necessary, and will, of course, wear much longer with a liner. You can also use MAC’s Prep + Prime Lip before you line and apply your lipstick to ensure everything applies smoothly and wears even longer. My favorite part about Amplified texture lipsticks is that they feel SO luxurious… This one especially! Like all MAC lipsticks, True Love’s Kiss has a soft vanilla scent but no flavor.

The packaging for True Love’s Kiss is different than the usual MAC packaging… As you can see above, the tube shares the same wings and title logo with the other products in this collection, as well as the shiny black plastic rather than the usual more matte finish packaging. The box is also a shiny black and has the same Maleficent logo on it. The fact that this is a limited edition/collaboration collection with special packaging raises the price a teeny bit, but that’s understandable since this costs more to make. Plus it’s cute, so I think it’s worth it!

True Love’s Kiss is limited edition and was released on Thursday, May 15th, so it’s available now (if it’s still in stock) at stores, counters, and online at www.maccosmetics.com. As of right now it’s sold out online but restocking on the website is occasionally a possibility. This lipstick contains the usual 3 g / 0.1 US oz of product and sells for $17.50… While this is $1.50 more than MAC’s permanent lipsticks, like I said, the special packaging makes it worth that extra bit of money, in my opinion.

True Love’s Kiss:   This lipstick is a “clean bright red” with an Amplified finish… It’s a medium-dark, bright, intense red with mostly neutral undertones that can sometimes look a bit warmer once applied to the lip, depending on how naturally pigmented your lips are. There are also some warm, red microshimmer particles that are more noticeable in the tube than on the lip, but they do give this lipstick a pretty sheen. The texture is very smooth and creamy (typical of Amplified lipsticks); however, True Love’s Kiss does look and feel shinier and more glossy. Color payoff is great, and looks brighter on the lip than in the tube. Coverage is really good, but not completely opaque… I would say it’s more like 90% opaque. I got around 4-5 hours of wear before I needed to touch up with this lipstick.

Liners:  There are several liners that work well with True Love’s Kiss… The one that was released and repromoted with this collection is the Pro Longwear Lip Pencil, Kiss Me Quick, which is a perfect match to this lipstick. You can also use Cherry Lip Pencil if you would like to pick up more blue based red tones, or Redd Lip Pencil if you would like to go with something warmer… You can do either with True Love’s Kiss since it’s a true, neutral red.

Dupes:   Most dupes I’ve found for this lipstick are, unfortunately, limited edition, but perhaps you already have them in your collection! The most recent one to be released is Head in the Clouds, from Playland. It’s the closest I can find color-wise, but it’s warmer and has a Frost finish. The most similar permanent dupe I’ve found is Cockney, but is’s a little darker/less bright and has more shimmer, since it’s a Lustre finish.
