MAC – Moody Blooms – Sheen Supreme Lipsticks: Photos, Swatches and Reviews

MAC’s newest collection, Moody Blooms, is full of bold colors that will remind you of the blooms of exotic flowers… There are even some darker colors in here, which I was really excited about. It’s a drastic change from the pastels of the collaboration with the Osbourne ladies but I’m thankful for an excuse to wear a dark lip again! There are six Sheen Supreme lipsticks in this collection, one being a permanent repromote and the rest being brand new colors. I will only be reviewing four in this post… Venomous Violet is available online only and I did not order it.

Note:   I received Moody Bloom in my MAC gratis, so I will be reviewing that Sheen Supreme Lipstick in a separate post!

Lust Extract – Pheremonal – Phosphorescent – Quite the Thing!

Sheen Supreme Lipsticks are a hybrid type of formula… The product itself is, of course, a lipstick and applies like one, but it’s not as thick and it has the shine of a gloss. This is MAC’s description of them: “Combining the colour impact of a Lipstick with the shine sheen of a Lipglass, Sheen Supreme creates the perfect hybrid – with no compromise. Lightweight, non-sticky, slick to apply and comfortable to wear”…

They have a creamy, slick texture with great color payoff and nearly opaque coverage.. Some colors offer full coverage, but it varies a bit in this formula. Wear time averages 4 hours or so, being longer with a liner and primer like Prep + Prime Lip, which also helps to hide any dry or chapped areas before applying light, more pastel or milky types of colors. Sheen Supreme Lipsticks are gel-based so they melt onto the lips and allows for a more lightweight texture that isn’t too thick or sticky. They also contain shea butter which gives your lips an instant infusion of moisture that lasts for several hours. I find that when I use these on a regular basis, my lips feel very smooth and don’t get so chapped.

The packaging for Sheen Supreme Lipsticks differs from MAC’s normal Lipstick tubes… These are a shiny, perfectly cylindrical shape, rather than the more matte, tapered type of tube. They actually contain more product than MAC’s “normal” range of Lipsticks, so that justifies the extra dollar that you pay for these!

The Moody Blooms collection was just released this past Thursday, June 26th, and is available now online at www.maccosmetics.com as well as at stores and counters. These contain 3.6 g / 0.12 US oz and sell for $17. Keep in mind that Quite the Thing! is permanent and Venomous Violet is ONLY available online. It seems like Quite the Thing! is sold out online right now but at most locations I’ve been to, it’s usually in stock. All of the other colors are available online and haven’t sold out where I work anyway, so hopefully they’re still around at your local MAC too!

Lust Extract

Lust Extract:   This is an “electric violet” with a very glossy finish… It’s an intense, medium to medium-dark, cool toned fuchsia with lots of sheen. Color payoff was slightly lighter than it appears as in the tube, but the color is even brighter on the lips. Coverage was pretty much opaque… It will only be on the sheer side if you don’t apply much, which is typical with Sheen Supremes. The texture is the same as all Sheen Supremes… Extremely slick and creamy, gliding easily onto the lips. I got about 4 hours of wear time before I had to touch up. The color lasts a little longer than the glossy finish does with this type of lipstick, so even when it starts to fade, your lips don’t look completely naked!

Liners:   There are several liners that you can use with Lust Extract, depending on how you want it to look… In Anticipation Pro Longwear Lip Pencil is good if you want a liner that will give definition, but not alter the color of the lipstick much/at all. You can also try Beet or Magenta Lip Pencils for medium amounts of color, with Beet warming this lipstick up and Magenta making it appear cooler and more magenta/fuchsia. If you want a deeper, more hot pink liner, More to Love Pro Longwear Lip Pencil will also work.

Dupes:   There aren’t really any permanent dupes for Lust Extract… Not in the same formula anyway. Zen Rose Sheen Supreme Lipstick is much darker and more purple/magenta. Full Speed is warmer, pinker, and more yellow based… As far as other lipstick formulas go, Bold Spring Mineralize Rich Lipstick is the closest dupe I’ve found based on color and sheen. It may be a teeeeeeny bit lighter, but it’s nearly a perfect dupe.

For limited edition dupes, you can try Daddy’s Little Girl Lipstick (Archie’s Girls, Feb 2013)… The color is close, though it’s a Satin finish and is slightly darker/bolder.

Pheremonal

Pheremonal:   This is described as a “dark blue pink” and has a glossy finish… It’s a medium, bright, cool toned pink (though for some reason, it shows up warmer in the tube and photos than it does on the lips). Color payoff is good, as is coverage. It does take some layering to get full, bold color payoff and totally opaque coverage, but that’s typical with this lipstick formula. The texture is smooth and slick, applying easily. Pheremonal gave me around 4 hours of wear before fading.

Liners:   Just about any medium to medium-dark, bright pink liner will work with Pheremonal… You can try Beet in the normal Lip Pencil formula, or More to Love or Dynamo Pro Longwear Lip Pencils.

Dupes:   Good Taste Mineralize Rich Lipstick is similar, but more intense and a bit darker. I honestly haven’t found any other dupes that are any closer than that one, either permanent or limited edition.

Phosphorescent

Phosphorescent

Phosphorescent:   Phosphorescent is an “electric pink coral” with a shiny finish… It’s a medium, bright, warm toned, yellow based pink with coral undertones. Color payoff was good, but softer than how it looks in the tube, while coverage is not quite full… I would say it’s more like 80% opaque. It applied very smoothly and felt moisturizing. I wore this for a little over 4 hours before I noticed fading.

Liners:   You can use several different liners with this lipstick… If you want it to lean more coral, I suggest Lasting Sensation Lip Pencil. To go more pink, try In Anticipation or Dynamo Pro Longwear Lip Pencil.

Dupes:   For permanent dupes, check out Full Speed Sheen Supreme Lipstick… it’s a bit darker and brighter, but very similar. Be A Lady Mineralize Rich Lipstick is also close, but lighter and slightly more pink. Since this formula is so unique and not released as limited very often, I couldn’t find any limited edition dupes.

Sorry this lipstick is not so pretty... I've had it for a while so it's been used a lot!

Quite the Thing!

Quite the Thing!

Quite the Thing!:   This is described as a “deep blue plum” and has a very glossy finish… It’s a medium-dark, cool toned berry fuchsia with very fine, multidimensional shimmer particles. Color payoff is not as dark as it is in the tube, but that’s normal with this formula. Coverage is nearly opaque, but not quite. It feels very smooth and creamy and glides on easily. Quite the Thing! gave me the usual 4-ish hours of wear before I needed to touch up.

Liners:   To brighten this lipstick up, you can use Magenta Lip Pencil. If you want to go a bit deeper with the liner, you can try Currant, Vino, or even Nightmoth Lip pencils.

Dupes:   Since this color is permanent and the Sheen Supreme formula is so unique, I don’t see much reason to find dupes! I would suggest just getting this one! It is sold out online at the moment but I’m sure it will be back in stock very soon.
