MAC Flamingo Park – Lipsticks

MAC’s new spring collection, Flamingo Park, launched just over a week ago and is full of bright hues, most being pinks and corals. I love this collection because it’s a nice change from all the dark colors and super matte textures of fall and winter. Even if bold colors aren’t necessarily your thing, you’re still sure to find something you love in this collection!

MAC Lipsticks are high quality and highly pigmented, though the amount of color payoff, coverage, wear time, shine, and shimmer differs between each finish. Most of these are Matte or Cremesheen, so you’ll either get high pigmentation and little to no shine, or moderate-buildable color payoff and a pretty, glossy sheen. Sometimes with Matte lipsticks, especially really light, bright, and nude colors, they can emphasize dry or chapped areas on your lips… I try to exfoliate my lips once or twice a week to eliminate any dry spots, then I make sure to apply a primer before putting on my lipstick… My favorite is MAC’s Prep + Prime Lip, but there are all kinds of lip primers out there. Prep + Prime Lip is silicone based and contains Vitamin E, so it locks in moisture without being too slippery and creates a smooth surface that your lipstick will stick to, also extending the wear time (definitely beneficial with Cremesheen lipsticks). Using a liner will also make your lipstick wear longer without fading or feathering outside the lip lines, which is a must with brighter colors!

Most of these lipsticks are limited edition, with only Saint Germain and Please Me being permanent. They’re all out now and can be purchased at your local MAC store or counter, or online at www.maccosmetics.com. As of right now, they’re all in stock online. They sell for $17 each and contain 3 g / 0.1 US oz of product. Like all MAC lipsticks, they have a subtle vanilla scent but no flavor.

Be Silly

Be Silly: This lipstick is described as a “hot fuchsia pink” and has a Matte finish. It’s a medium-dark, bold pink with cool fuchsia undertones and a creamy matte finish. While I’m not typically a fan of bright pinks, I found this to be really flattering on my skintone, as well of everyone else’s who I’ve seen put this on!

As a typical matte lipstick, the texture is smooth and almost creamy, and dries down to a true matte not long after applying it.  The color payoff with Be Silly is super intense and also gives full coverage. Wear time, as with most mattes, is around 6 hours.

Liners: Embrace Me (limited) is perfect with Be Silly, and was released with this collection. It has also been released several times in the past. As for permanent lip pencils, Talking Points works well, or you can even use something like Currant or Vino to create a darker, more ombre look. If you’d like a longer wearing liner, you can try More To Love Pro Longer Lip Pencil.

Dupes: Melt’s Shady Lady is similar, but darker. MAC’s Candy Yum Yum is lighter and warmer toned. Pink Pigeon is slightly lighter and less fuchsia, but is the closest permanent dupe I’ve found.

Flocking Fabulous

Flocking Fabulous

Flocking Fabulous: This is a “bright coral red” and has a Cremesheen finish. It’s a medium, bright pinky-coral red with a warm, pearly sheen and a warm undertone. This type of color works well for all skintones, and since it’s a Cremesheen, you can apply a little if you just want a hint of color, or you can layer it up for full color payoff.

It has a very smooth texture and isn’t the least bit drying. Color payoff is bright and looks nearly the same on as it does in the tube. Flocking Fabulous also has pretty good coverage, though it’s not completely opaque. I got about a little over 4 hours of wear before I needed to touch up.

Liners: You can use a wide variety of liners with this lipstick, since it has pink/coral/red tones to it. Chic Trick, which was repromoted with this collection, looks perfect with Flocking Fabulous. You could also use Cherry or Redd if you want to go with a more red tint. For a brighter more coral look, you could try Lasting Sensation. I’ve also seen this with Auburn and Mahogany, which will tone it down and deepen it a bit.

Dupes: I can’t really find any great permanent dupes… Ladybug and Cockney are both soft, semi-sheer reds, but they’re not as coral/pink toned. Watch me Simmer (Shop/Cook MAC) is similar, but lighter.

Have Your Cake

Have Your Cake

Have Your Cake

Have Your Cake: Have Your Cake is a “bright magenta” with a Matte finish. It’s a medium-dark, slightly cool toned, bold magenta with a matte finish that has a hint of a satiny sheen. While I personally am not drawn to colors like this, it is really pretty on most skintones, but I do find it to be most flattering on anyone NC/NW30 and up. That said, it still looks great on lighter skintones too, but it does look very bold if you’re naturally fair like I am!

Like some Matte finish lipsticks, Have Your Cake has an extremely creamy texture, which also results in it having the slightest amount of sheen that never seems to turn 100% matte. Color payoff is great, though it tends to look warmer toned on the lips than it does in the tube. It’s mostly opaque, only having some trouble staying put in the center of the lip for some people. I got 5-6 hours of wear before I noticed any fading, and most was in that pesky center area. Overall, I like this lipstick, but it’s not what I expect from a Matte finish.

Liners: Embrace Me (limited), which was rereleased with Flamingo Park, works with this, but will make it more pinky toned. Magenta is an obvious choice, as is Fashion Boost Pro Longer Lip Pencil. If you want to use a darker pencil for a more ombre lip, try Vino, Currant, or even Nightmoth.

Dupes: Heroine is darker and more of a true purple. Flat Out Fabulous is also a bit darker and more cool toned, but it’s pretty close.

Long Legged & Fabulous

Long Legged & Fabulous

Long Legged & Fabulous: This lipstick is a “soft baby pink” with a Cremesheen finish. It’s a light, warm toned, yellow based, milky pink with a soft pearly sheen. Because this lipstick is so light and milky, I definitely recommend applying Prep + Prime lip first so you won’t have anything settle in the lines of your lips (like it did in this photo).

Like most Cremesheens, Long Legged & Fabulous applies smoothly and feels creamy. Color payoff is actually really good and very similar to how it looks in the tube, despite the fact that this is only about 85% opaque. I got just over 4 hours of wear before it began to fade. This finish/texture does seem to cause the dreaded “slime line” towards the inner part of the mouth after a couple of hours, though.

Overall Rating:   4.5 / 5

Liners: In Synch is permanent and was released along with this collection, and works well with this lipstick. You could also try Rosy Rim, Soar, or Dervish if you want to stay in the light-medium pink range. There are many other liners that will look great as well, but those are a few that I’ve actually tried.

Dupes: Real Doll (limited) is darker and more pink. Sweet Experience (limited) is more coral and intense. Catty (limited) is more coral, but pretty close. As for permanent dupes, Creme Cup is more nude-pink, but is quite similar, especially if you use a brighter, warmer toned liner with it.

Nice To Meet You

Nice To Meet You

Nice To Meet You: Nice To Meet You is a “deep pink red” with a Cremesheen finish. It’s a medium-dark, bright, warm toned pinky red with a pearly golden sheen. I love this color because you can apply it lightly, rub it in, and it looks like a gorgeous, natural type of glossy stain. This type of color is beautiful and easily wearable on all ages and skintones.

It has a very smooth texture and glides onto the lips easily. The color is not quite so intense on the lips as it is in the tube, but it’s still very pretty. Coverage is alright, but I would say it’s only about 75% opaque… It’s hard to tell though, since it’s just a bit brighter and more colorful than most people’s natural lip color. That also comes in handy when it begins to fade, making it less noticeable… I got just over 4 hours of wear time with Nice To Meet You.

Overall Rating:   4.5 / 5

Liners: If you want to take a more reddish route with your liner, you can try Redd or Cherry. Lasting Sensation and Chic Trick are also nice, and both have more coral undertones. If you’d like this to look more pink, you can go with something like Talking Points, or Dynamo Pro Longer Lip Pencil.

Dupes: Party Parrot (limited) is actually really similar in color, but it’s more intense, more pigmented, and matte. For a permanent dupe, Impassioned is bolder, more pigmented, and more pink. Fusion Pink is pinker and cooler toned.

Please Me

Please Me

Please Me

Please Me: This is one of the two permanent lipsticks being repromoted with this collection… It’s a “muted rosy tinted pink” with a Matte finish. It’s a medium, slightly warm toned pink and is still creamy, even though it’s matte. Please Me has been one of MAC’s best selling pink lipsticks for years, and for good reason. It’s not too bright, not too light, and has just the right amount of a yellow base, so it doesn’t make anyone look washed out.

For a Matte lipstick, Please Me feels buttery and applies without any tugging. Color payoff is good, though doesn’t tend to look as bright as it does in the tube.  Coverage is opaque, except in the center of the lip sometimes, but this is common with Mattes. Wear time usually lasts 5-6 hours for me.

Overall Rating:   4.7 / 5

Liners: Nearly any pinkish liner can be used with Please Me. A few of my favorites are Soar, Dervish, Whirl, or even Half-Red, Embrace Me, or Talking Points if you want to add some more dimension. You could also use In Anticipation Pro Longwear Lip Pencil if you’d like to add to the wear time.

Dupes: Since this is a permanent lipstick, I don’t think that dupes are completely necessary, and to be honest, I don’t really have any in my collection that are very similar!

Saint Germain

SONY DSC

Saint Germain

Saint Germain

Saint Germain: This is the other permanent lipstick that’s been repromoted with Flamingo Park. It’s a “clean pastel pink” with an Amplified finish… It’s a light to medium, pastel pink with a very blue/lavender, cool toned base and a soft shine. Amplified lipsticks are known for their luxurious quality, creamy texture and high pigmentation, and Saint Germain is no exception. Because this is a light, somewhat milky type of pastel, I do recommend applying Prep + Prime lip first so you don’t have to worry about settling into the lines of your lips.

As I mentioned, this lipstick is very creamy and applies easily without any tugging. Color payoff is intense and is nearly as bright as it is in the tube, though it may look less cool toned if you have naturally very pigmented, warmer toned lips. Coverage is nearly opaque and I only ever have any trouble with it staying on the center of my lip, but that’s easily fixable if you just smudge it around a little with your finger. Wear time for me is 4-5 hours, which is typical with most Amplified finish lipsticks.

Overall Rating:   4.5 / 5

Liners: I love Hip ‘N’ Happy lip pencil with this because it’s cool toned and a bit darker, so it works perfectly. You can also use pencils like Soar, Dervish, or even Candy Yum-Yum or Embrace Me for more contrast. I also like Shock Value Pro Longer Lip Pencil when I’m looking for something with a longer wear time.

Dupes: Again, since this is permanent, dupes aren’t needed, and I can’t find anything very similar anyway!

Silly

SONY DSC

Silly

Silly

Silly: Silly is a repromote, as it’s been released before, but it’s still limited edition. It’s described as a “bright white pink” and it has a Matte finish… Silly is a medium, bright, slightly warm toned pink with a creamy type of matte finish that doesn’t go completely matte or feel dry at all. The part about it being a “white pink” can be confusing, but it means it has a white base so it shows up intense and true to the color it is in the tube!

The texture is smooth and this lipstick applies well with no tugging like you may get with drier types of mattes. Color payoff is equally bright and intense on the lips as it is in the tube. I got full coverage with Silly and a great wear time of about 6 hours.

Overall Rating:   4.8 / 5

Application:   5

Coverage:  5

Color Payoff:   5

Texture:   5

Wear Time:   4

Packaging:   5

Liners: There was actually a Silly Lip Pencil released with this in a previous collection, so naturally that’s the perfect match… If you don’t have that, you can use Embrace Me, which came out with Flamingo Park, or something like Candy Yum-Yum or Talking Points.

Dupes: Pink Nouveau is a little cooler toned, but it’s close, and it’s permanent. Pink Pigeon is also very similar, though perhaps a bit darker and cooler toned.

The Fashion Flock

The Fashion Flock

The Fashion Flock: Last but not least, The Fashion Flock is the only online exclusive lipstick from this collection and it’s definitely worth ordering! It’s a “bright pink coral” with a Matte finish, and it’s stunning on everyone I’ve seen wear it! It’s a medium, bright, warm toned pinky coral with a creamy matte finish that never looks too dry.

Like the other Mattes in this collection, this lipstick applies easily, though you may want to put on Prep + Prime Lip first to keep it from settling into the natural lines and creases of your lips, especially if they’re dry or dehydrated like mine were in these photos! Both color payoff and coverage were fantastic, and I got a solid 6 hours of wear, only noticing some fading in the very center of my lip after a little while.

Overall Rating:   5 / 5

Application:   5

Coverage:  5

Color Payoff:   5

Texture:   5

Wear Time:   5

Packaging:   5

Liners: Chic Trick, which is permanent, but was also promoted with this collection, looks fantastic when paired with this lipstick. If you want to play up the coral tones, you can also use something like Lasting Sensation or 18C Aqua Lip Pencil from Make Up For Ever. To emphasize the pinky tones, you could do Embrace Me, or even In Synch (these require some blending). Rosy Rim is also great and is right between a pink and coral.

Dupes: Vegas Volt is darker and more orange based. Coral Bliss is lighter and peachier. Lipblossom is close, but must softer and less pigmented.
