This post is SO overdue because I’ve been wearing this eyeliner just about every day lately, or every day that I wear eyeliner anyway, I just haven’t had the time to make a post these past few weeks. I’m a huge fan of anything end everything from Dose of Colors and their Set the Tone launch for their Cream Matte Eyeliners did not disappoint! I actually set my alarm for this launch so I could get everything ASAP and work on testing them out. While there are nine more shades, I have not tried those yet, but I plan on it over the next week or two, so the reviews for them will be up soon!
As you all probably know by now, I prefer purchasing products from smaller brands… Partially due to the fact that I like to support small businesses and know how much hard work, blood, sweat, and tears is put into the business itself, and partially because I also feel like most smaller brands offer high quality products that rival, if not outdo, high end and luxury brands without hurting your bank account! I think it’s because most of the people who start these brands, like Anna Petrosian, actually have a hands on approach when it comes to product development and quality control. Dose of Colors also gets major points with me because they’re a cruelty free company and most of their products are vegan (although I don’t believe these eyeliners are, but I’ll double check). These liners, as with most of their products, are also free of gluten and parabens. Fyi those little links are to Instagram, but you can check them out on Twitter too by clicking here.
Also, if you want to keep up with me, my name on Twitter, Instagram, Vero, and Snapchat is lesley_makeup. I love to hear from you guys and get your ideas for new posts and looks that I’m trying SO very hard to find the confidence to post!!
I forgot to photograph the box for this post, but the packaging/component for these eyeliners looks clean and classy, which is the usual from Dose of Colors. It’s made of heavy duty glass for the base and has a pretty sturdy plastic lid, so I feel like these could survive being dropped or tossed in a travel bag. I like that the glass base is clear so you can tell what color they are when you store them either on their side or upside down (which I do)… Also, I’m not sure if this is true or not BUT during my 8 years at MAC, I was always told that storing gel or cream eyeliners upside down will actually keep them from drying out as quickly. In my experience, this is true, but I could totally just be imagining things! You definitely want to make sure that you screw the lid on TIGHTLY, though, since these are creams.
You may notice that they pull away from the sides and kind of “shrink” as time goes by, and some may even come like that brand new (a couple of mine did), but it’s nothing to worry about unless it’s so dried out it’s impossible to use or looks like it’s dry and cracking. Also, for sanitary purposes and to keep these from drying out as quickly, it’s a good idea to scoop out a little bit with a CLEAN makeup spatula or whatever you like to use for that purpose, and put that on the back of your hand or a palette, then dip your brush into that little blob of liner. That way you aren’t double dipping and putting bacteria back into your eyeliner pot, or leaving it open to air that will suck the moisture right out of it over time!
The above photo has been brightened a lot so you can see the texture of Shady.
This is what the Dose of Colors website has to say about these eyeliners: “Our Matte Cream Eyeliner is highly pigmented, long wearing that goes on creamy and quickly dries to a rich matte finish, long lasting and smudge proof”.
It’s a SUPER creamy formula that’s thick, but it also feels, I don’t know… fluffy? It almost seems whipped, although I can’t verify that. It’s not so thick that it makes application tricky, but it’s also not runny at all and you don’t have to layer this liner, although with the texture, you can if needed… It’s not the type of liner that flakes off and makes a mess if you want to layer it. These really glide on like a dream, whether you’re using an angled brush or a thinner, more precise liner brush. They also hold up to the quick drying claim, so if you want to use these for a smudgier look, like below the lower lash line, you’ll want to work pretty quickly to smudge and smoke that liner out! My absolute favorite thing, besides the pigmentation, is the fact that they really do last ALL DAY LONG with little to no smudging. I wear contacts and have horrible allergies this time of year, so my eyes are constantly watering. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this liner held it’s perfectly sharp, winged shape even through several days of allergy attacks, a mild crying session (yay, hormones), and a few naps. That said, it’s not waterproof, so it’s still easy to remove before bed. I use micellar water or makeup wipes before I wash my face, but I had no leftover residue when I was done!
These Cream Matte Eyeliners are a new but permanent product. They can be purchased on the Dose of Colors website and Ulta’s website (I’m not sure when they’ll be available in store but I’ll look into that). You can also pick these up at the Naimie’s store in Valley Village/North Hollywood, California or on the Naimie’s website. Each liner costs $19 from all retailers and contains 0.14 oz / 4g of product. That’s comparable to something like MAC’s Fluidline, but still a much better deal than similar liners from brands like Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier (if they even make that type of liner any more). Also no shade, but like I said, I think the quality of this eye liner is far superior to those other brands!
Money saving tip: If you are a professional makeup artist, you can get these a little cheaper from Naimie’s if you’ve been approved for their professional discount, which Dose of Colors does not offer yet. HOWEVER, Dose of Colors has a majorly awesome rewards program that almost balances out to what you would save ordering from Naimie’s as a professional makeup artist. Basically, even if you’re not a MUA, you can still save some money, but make sure you create an account of the Dose of Colors website so you can get those reward points!
Shady is a “jet black” color which dries down to a true matte finish. It’s your classic black liner that will work for any look and on anyone!
As I mentioned earlier in this post, the formula is ultra creamy and very easy to apply. My only issue was that because it dries quickly, I did have to wipe off my brush before I applied it to the other eye so the brush didn’t have any dried clumps of liner on it, which would make application less than precise. This formula also seems to be very gentle for the delicate eye area, so that made it really easy for me to wear all day long considering that I have super sensitive eyes and it seems like everything makes me tear up or itch.
The color is a dark, intense black that is true to, if not darker than how it looks in the jar. It’s also fully opaque with one quick swipe of product, so you don’t need to use very much. The swatch above was made with a MAC 266 angled liner brush with the tiniest amount on product on it and only one swipe… No layering involved! Wear time was great and this liner lasted on me for well over 12 hours. I noticed a little fading around the tip of my wing around hour 10, but that’s pretty impressive!
Dupes: While there are probably a few dupes out there, all the ones that I’ve tried are actually gels. I can’t vouch for the quality of Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink because I’ve only tried it once, but it is a gel formula. Same with MAC’s classic Blacktrack Fluidline… It’s also a gel based formula and seems to be less pigmented than Shady is.

This post expresses my own honest opinion. I purchased these with my own money and did not receive any type of PR or compensation for this review. I hype it because I like it.
