I get asked a lot of questions, whether it’s through comments here on my blog, through emails, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and in person sooooo I think it’s time I answer all of them on here! It’s hard for me to respond thoroughly to everyone individually sometimes so hopefully I can cover everything in this post. If there’s anything else you want to know, leave a comment on this post and I’ll add it to the list!!

1)   Are you a “real” makeup artist?

Yes! I do freelance work for weddings, events, photos, personal lessons, etc. I’m also an Artist for MAC Cosmetics.

2)   When did you start doing makeup?

I was in high school when I really became interested in makeup, so that would be about 15 years ago? Something like that anyway.

3)   How old are you?

Since I was in high school about 15 years ago… Old. Okay so I’m not THAT old yet, I’m 31 (which looks a lot older when I type it)!

4)   How did you get started doing makeup?

Long story short… I went through an ugly duckling phase as a teenager so my mom was nice enough to take me to a makeup counter so I could get some concealer/powder/lipgloss/whatever. After that I fell in love with makeup because it made me feel so much better about myself. Fast forward a few years… I was COMPLETELY obsessed and started practicing looks from magazines and stuff on myself, family, and friends. I did makeup for my cousin’s prom. I helped out friends when they had events to go to or were getting their photos taken. I did work with photographer friends… I basically took every opportunity possible to do makeup on other people.

5)   What made you want to do makeup as a job?

It’s fun. It’s something that’s always changing and I get to help people feel better about themselves and look their best. It’s really rewarding for me to teach people how to emphasize the things they like about their face and hide the things that they don’t love. I think that everyone should feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. Sounds cheesy, I know, but it’s the truth! Oh! Also, I got my paws on the books Making Faces and Face Forward by the late and great Kevyn Aucoin… His natural talent and passion were things I saw in myself and I from that moment forward, I knew that I had to follow my dreams and make a career out of doing what I love. Discovering MAC also made me want to become a MAC Artist because the Artists at the counter back home were just badasses and they really inspired me!

6)   Did you go to school for makeup? Where did you learn?

To begin with, I was self-taught. The first 5 or so years that I did makeup, I just practiced on myself and other people. I used to hang out at the MAC counter back home and got to know the artists there, who ended up teaching me some really valuable things that still help me out to this day! YouTube was also a really valuable tool for me to learn a lot about different brands and techniques… Eventually I decided that I didn’t want to be stuck doing makeup just for weddings/proms/senior pictures and I hopped on a plane to Los Angeles to check out Makeup Designory (MUD). I ended up moving out here and completing the Fashion program at MUD so I could fine tune some techniques and learn more about the industry… So yeah here I am today, living my dream!

7)   What inspires you?

All sorts of things, really… Other artists, of course, like looks I see on Instagram or YouTube, work I see done by artists I work with, fashion and trends, nature, my mood, music… A little bit of everything!

8)   Do your family/boyfriend/friends support your decision to become a makeup artist instead of going to school and doing something else?

They do! I’m surrounded by wonderful people who also do what they love for a living, so I have a great support system… Everyone understands that I’m a creative person and they get that this is my outlet and my passion as well as my job. They don’t just support me either… They all push me to better myself and be even more awesome and never stop progressing, so I’m super thankful for that!

9)   Did you go to college?

I did… I went to a community college and majored in two different things because I couldn’t make up my mind. I tried both Psychology and Biology. I loved them both but I didn’t finish and get a degree in either… I’m only a few credit hours away but I decided to attend MUD and move out to Los Angeles, which basically used up the rest of my college fund. No regrets at all, though! Best decision I ever made!

10)   What would you do if you weren’t a makeup artist?

I would most likely go back to school and work towards a degree in zoology or entomology. I love animals and bugs so it would be fun to work with them and do field research to help with conservation.

11)  Where are you from?

Norman, Oklahoma born and raised! I now live in Manhattan Beach, just south of Los Angeles.

12)   Do you do any special effects makeup?

I know how, but I don’t do much of it any more. I learned how to do basic character makeup and apply prosthetics and do old age makeup, beards, etc at MUD but it’s not something that comes up with most of the work I do these days. It’s fun to do at times, but I definitely prefer making people pretty!

13)   What else are you into?

You probably don’t want to know lol… I really love animals and nature. I have a ton of pets, most of which being creepy crawlies… My boyfriend and I have a bunch of snakes, geckos, tarantulas, scorpions, a tortoise, and a really sweet, adorable boxer who is more like a child to me than a dog. I love going on hikes and looking for wildlife too. A few more “normal” things I’m into are hoarding clothes and shoes, photography, fishing (which I need to do more of), cooking & baking, reading, writing, and video games… I’m a total nerd. I’m getting more and more into collecting orchids too, thanks to the boyfriend and his nerdiness. Sorry babe, your secret is out!

14)   Why do you review so much MAC makeup?

Well, I don’t just go buy products to review for the hell of it… If I review something, it’s because I got it for myself or for my kit. Most happens to be MAC because I’ve always used and preferred that brand, even before I started working there.

15)   Do you get paid to review products or get free products to review?

Nope! Anything I review is something I’ve spent my own money on. If I did get free stuff, I wouldn’t hype something up, or even necessarily review it if I wasn’t even into it to begin with . So don’t fear, nothing on here will ever be anything but my own, honest opinion about the products I review!

16)   How do you get a job at MAC?

Well, you apply first! Take in a resume, look your best (in all black), and let your personality shine through!

17)   What is your favorite type of makeup to do?

Beauty/glamour I suppose… Yes, that whole “Kim K” kind of look. It’s just fun to look that gorgeous or to make someone else up to look damn sexy! I like to be creative too and do looks that aren’t necessarily the norm for beauty makeup. I like some of my work to be different and unique and really stand out.

18)   Why the name “lesleyrocksface”?

My name is Lesley. I rock, and I rock at beating face… So somehow that transformed into lesleyrocksface. I thought it was cute and I guess it just stuck!

19)   Why don’t you post looks on yourself?

Honestly, because I’ve gone through a super insecure phase over the past few years. Yep, I’m a typical girl when it comes to that kind of thing! I am starting to feel more confident though, and I want to share my looks with everyone, so you can count on seeing a lot more of those soon! I’m most likely to post them on my makeup Ingstagram account, which is @lesleymarshallmua, so go follow me on there!

20)   Do you have a YouTube channel?

Technically, yes, I do, it’s just not being used yet! I am planning on doing tutorials and reviews on there soon. I’ll make a post when I get it up and running!

21)   What are your favorite brands of makeup/cosmetics?

I love MAC (duh), Make Up For Ever, NARS, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Too Faced, Urban Decay, Melt, Guerlain, Deborah Lippmann (for nails), and La Mer (for skincare).

22)   What are the top 5 products you can’t live without?

Only 5?! Oh gosh this is tough… MAC Face & Body Foundation, La Mer Creme de la Mer moisturizer, MAC Fast Response Eye Cream, MAC Prep + Prime Moisture Infusion, MAC Invisible Set Powder… Perfect skin is a must for me!

23)   Why don’t you post as often as you used to?

I’ve been busy! I was promoted from a freelance/on call artist for MAC to a permanent Artist soooo between work and real life stuff like taking care of all my pets and finding some me time to relax, I don’t have as much time to blog as I used to. I’m going to try to make at least a post a week, though… Don’t give up me me just yet haha!

24)   Can you help me find the right foundation/blush/lipstick?

Via my blog/email/facebook/whatever? No, probably not. It’s best to go to your local MAC or other makeup counter or store and get a personal consultation with an artist there. It’s just too hard to fully analyze a face via the internet. Sorry!

25)   Can you do my makeup?

If you live in the Los Angeles area and want to pay me, yes, of course I can! As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I do freelance work, so if you need a makeup artist, you can check out my website: and contact me from there to set up something!

Wow, that took longer than I thought… I hope I covered most everything that my readers, followers, and friends have asked me! If you wanna know more, ask away in the comments section below 🙂

Okay, so I know that shopping doesn’t REALLY cure a cold, but it helps a lot, especially when nearly everything is discounted or free! It made me feel better anyway. My camera battery died in the middle of swatches and I lost my natural light so I figured a trip to the mall sounded nice. I needed to get out of the house! I’ve been cooped up in here and sick for several days and I was starting to go a little nuts.

I am still working on reviews today, I just needed a break! Reviews of the four collections I posted yesterday will be up by tomorrow morning, I promise. Hopefully I can get to swatches tomorrow as well and have all of those up by tomorrow evening or Wednesday morning. I apologize for the delays!

I needed to redeem my birthday perk from Sephora and had over 200 points to use on perks. Birthday gift was two mini SPF 15 Lip Treatments from fresh… Sugar and Sugar Rose Tinted. One 100 point perk I got is La Vanila’s Vanilla Blackberry perfume. It’s a wee little thing but enough to test out. I like their other scents, plus it’s natural and not tested on animals so that’s a plus. I also got a 10ml tube of KORRES Pomegranate Face Primer. I LOVE their other primer, but this one is mattifying, which seems perfect for someone with oily skin, like me. I have high hopes for this primer so I’ll be sure to use it for a while and review it. The only thing I actually spent money on was my Bvlgari Mon Jasmine Noir Eau de Parfum. It smells a little woodsy, but still feminine and light. It’s very sexy… I’ll do a perfume review in the near future of all of my favorites so keep an eye out for that!

The MAC counter was also one of my stops… A) I wanted to see my friends there and B) I needed to get some lipsticks. I picked up Morange and Fleshpot. Since Morange is part of the Iris Apfel collection, I’ll be adding a photo of it tomorrow. Yay!

Chocolate also seemed like a good idea, and conveniently, there is a Godiva store right in between Macy’s and Sephora. $35 of chocolate for $4.90… Not a bad deal! Rewards cards, a monthly free chocolate, and my birthday chocolate gift. I am currently nomming a dark chocolate covered strawberry/banana kabob, which seems to have melted on my fingers and transferred to my keyboard. Oops…

Last but definitely not least is the GORGEOUS pair of black suede Jeffrey Campbell Supremes I brought home with me. I’ve had my eyes on these for several months. I’m weird like that. I don’t impulse buy shoes. I think about it for a long time and really consider what I can wear them with before I decide to give in and buy them. I’m glad I did. They make my legs look amazing and I am hoping that the chunkier heel and platform keeps me from toppling over. I’m normally too clumsy to wear heels. It’s a pity, since I’m only 5’4″ and I could use a few extra inches sometimes. If these work out for me I may have to go back and get the plain black suede and nude suede Supremes too. Here you go, look at them and drool. You can also squeal if you like. I know I did.

Oh. Em. Gee. The past two months have been INSANE! Working at MAC is amazing and it’s been keeping me busy with all of the collections that came out around the holidays. So that would be my excuse for neglecting my blog once again. Sorry!!

On the plus side, there are some huge collections coming out that I’ve been looking forward to for months now. I’ve had some time to play around with the products from Daphne Guinness for MAC, Tour De Fabulous, Iris Apfel, MAC Naturally, and the new line of Mineralize skincare products, and I can’t wait to share swatches and reviews with all of you! I don’t have the entire line of products from every one of these collections but I will do my best to give the most extensive reviews possible. All of the makeup I have from these, I have purchased myself, so I usually only buy the stuff that really catches my eye, will be a staple in my own personal makeup, or will be beneficial to my freelance kit. That said, I ended up getting an awful lot haha. These collections are some of my favorites that MAC has come out with in the past year and I am SUPER excited about them!

I’ve also been playing around with the idea of adding other things to this blog in the coming year… I have a shoe, clothing, jewelry, and handbag addiction so I want YOUR opinion about adding some of that to my blog. I wouldn’t say I’m the trendiest person alive but I am proud of my semi-quirky sense of style. Maybe you’d dig it, maybe not. Maybe I’ll give it a shot? Let me know what you think!!

It’s been FOREVER since I posted on here. I apologize for that but it’s been for very good reasons!

I am in the process of moving to California for good! I went back to Oklahoma for two weeks to relax and pack up all of my stuff in case I found a place to live in Cali… and a whopping two days after I returned, I found a house (yes, an actual house with a yard, not another apartment)! One week later my boyfriend and I signed the lease and next day we moved all of our stuff out of the apartment and into our new home. Pretty crazy, huh? A week two from now all of my furniture and belongings from Oklahoma will be here and in two days I’m going to be bringing my dogs out to California. I can’t believe that a year ago I was going to school at Makeup Designory and now I’m living the dream in the wonderful area they call South Bay.

On top of finding an awesome place to call home, I had SO many fun job interviews over the past few weeks. I got hired and worked at GameStop for a week, which was actually really fun for a nerd like me. Unfortunately I had to quit… For a very fortunate reason though! That reason is… *drumroll please*… I GOT HIRED BY MAC COSMETICS!!!!!! Aaaaaaah so cool! That’s been the makeup artistry job that I have wanted pretty much since I started playing with makeup back in high school. All of my dreams are coming true… Dream job, man of my dreams, cute mini dream house… Someone pinch me!

It’s hard to believe that in the beginning of 2010 I was living in Oklahoma, dealing with a lot of anxiety and depression and felt really lost, but somehow I picked myself up, went after what I wanted and got it all. That goes to show you that the best things in life do not come easily, but they’re worth EVERY bit of blood, sweat and tears. If you want something, go after it! YOU are the only person who controls your destiny, so take that control and be whatever you want! Not a lot of people had faith in me until I had faith in myself. Have you ever heard the phrase “fake it until you make it”? That’s what I had to do for a while… I had to pretend that I was the most confident person in the world until I became that. Believe me, I was TERRIFIED to move away and try to make a life out here but I kept at it and here I am, living a life that seems like a fairy tale. A few years ago I never would have imagined any of this was possible. Moral of this story is that no matter who you are or where you live, anything is attainable, so never give up 🙂

Alright, I will stop being so flipping perky now haha… I promise to make a brief makeup related post on here tomorrow!! Thanks for reading!
