Real Life

Hey everyone! Long time no see, I know, but I’ve been super busy with work, as in glamming people up!

Yesterday I just wrapped on a couple of shoots for a calendar that’s for a local charity, which I will share on here as soon as I get approved images from the photographer. I’m super excited about it because I got to do some really creative makeups as well as some classic looks and they all turned out SO well!

I’ve been trying to come up with a better layout/outline for reviews to make it easier to read when you’re in a hurry, but I still want to cover all the important parts, as always. I think I may split posts between a brief rundown and a more in-depth/how-to, or put the more extensive part below the summary… What are your thoughts on this? I’d love for some input!

Some additional ideas for regularly featured posts are monthly favorites, what’s trending in the makeup world, and adding a skincare feature each week for “Skincare Sunday” of something new or something that’s a must have product for me. I’m working on the whole YouTube thing but I’m still getting the hang of it and learning to edit, as well as overcoming my anxiety with filming (yep, I have anxiety disorder and it flares up PRETTY bad over some things)… Making videos is NOT as easy as it looks, but I’m getting there! I feel like I don’t want to half-ass my videos and disappoint anyone, ya know?

I’ve picked up a TON of new products over the past couple of months, which I’m currently photographing and rephotographing with my new lighting setup… I mean I’m working on it at this moment! So here are some of the posts that will be coming up in the near future:

  • Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette
  • Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
  • Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment
  • Sunday Riley UFO Clarifying Face Oil
  • Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil
  • Melt Cosmetics Hot Box Collection Haze Eye Shadow Stack
  • Melt Cosmetics Hot Box Collection Lipstick in Cherried
  • Melt Cosmetics Hot Box Collection AllDay/Everyday Lip Liners in Kink and Edible
  • Melt Cosmetics Hot Box Collection AllDay/Everyday Eye Liners in Baked and Bloodshot
  • Jeffree Star Summer Chrome Collection Lip Vault (all 8 Velour Liquid Lipsticks and all 5 Lip Ammunition Lipsticks
  • Jeffree Star Summer Chrome Collection Watermelon Gum Lip Scrub
  • Jeffree Star Summer Chrome Collection Skin Frosts in Summer Snowcone and Crystal Ball
  • Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks (several permanent colors)
  • Jeffree Star Beauty Killer Eye Shadow Palette
  • Jeffree Star Princess Cut Skin Frost
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette (not sure why I never posted it before?)
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Glow in Perla, Bronzed, and Peach Fizz
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills new Matte Lipsticks – All 30 of them, but in singles or groups for posts… That would be too overwhelming as one review!
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills most recent single eye shadows from Summer 2017
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Lipglosses from Summer 2017 (only a few colors)
  • Kylie Cosmetics In Love with the Koko Collection Matte Liquid Lipsticks & Gloss
  • Kylie Cosmetics Send Me More Nudes Matte Liquid Lipstick set
  • Kylie Cosmetics Send Me More Nudes Velvet Liquid Lipstick set
  • Kylie Cosmetics Koko Collection Matte Liquid Lipsticks (excluding Gorg) & Gloss
  • Marc Jacobs Beauty Re(marc)able Full Cover Foundation
  • Marc Jacobs Beauty Genius Gel SuperCharged Oil Free Foundation
  • Marc Jacobs Beauty Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer
  • Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronzer in the color Tantric
  • Marc Jacobs Beauty Air Blush Soft Glow Duo Blushes
  • Marc Jacobs Beauty Re(cover) Perfecting Coconut Setting Mist
  • Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter
  • L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara (waterproof and regular formulas)

There are a lot more products too, but that’s just some examples of what I’ve been photographing and testing recently. I plan on slowly posting EVERY Anastasia Beverly Hills Single Eye Shadow, Liquid Lipstick, and Lip Gloss too, as well as a lot of permanent products from MAC and other brands that have been my go-to’s for a long time!

Sometimes it may take me a while to get reviews up after a product launches because I do purchase everything myself, so I have to order it, receive it in the mail, THEN thoroughly test it out before I give you all my honest opinion. It’s also just dependent only work schedule at times, but I’m going to start pre-writing reviews so I can post them even when I’m swamped with other things and don’t have time to write!

I’ve been posting peeks at products on my TwitterInstagram and Snapchat more often and consistently, so be sure to go follow me on those platforms… All are under the name lesley_makeup.

Well, now you all know what’s been going on and what’s to come! If you have ANY suggestions for posts or products you’d like to see, please leave me a comment! I do this because of YOU, so your input is always appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

XO, Lesley

I’m sure you all are like “Where did Lesley go this time?”, and yes, I’ve been MIA, but it’s because I started working for MAC again recently so my schedule has been hectic!

I’m really, really excited to be doing makeup again and getting to play with all of MAC’s new, awesome products! Obviously makeup is a passion of mine, so I’m happy to be part of MAC’s family after relocating back to Oklahoma and having to leave my job with them when I had to move. I honestly love this job SO much, and it’s even better that I’m now working at the counter where I fell in love with MAC and makeup in general. I learned so much at this counter and now I get to pass on that knowledge to the next generation of our customers!

That said, I’ll be preparing posts on my days off that will post once or twice a week, one on Sundays and likely one on Wednesdays. My apologies for having a serious lack of posts lately but taking this job was an opportunity that came up suddenly and I’ve been fully dedicating myself to my work!

A few new products I’ve picked up lately are the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks, LORAC’s Unzipped and Unzipped Gold eye shadow palettes, as well as a few Becca and The Balm Highlighters, and of course new MAC products!! There’s lots of fun stuff to look forward to, I promise it will be worth the wait!

Thanks again for reading and for your patience ❤

XO,

Lesley

Hey everyone! I wanted to quickly apologize for any recent delays in new posts… I’m not going to disappear again, I’ve just had really severe weather in my area almost daily for the past two weeks so I haven’t had internet or power a lot of the time! I actually wrote 5-6 posts that I thought I’d saved as drafts that only needed some tweaking, and when I went to post them last night, it looks like they were lost during one of the power/internet outages since I had forgotten to save them like a total idiot. I’m working on redoing those now, so it may be a day or two, but I’ll have something up soon!

Almost two weeks ago a tornado actually hit my house! It ripped a branch off of my big tree, knocked out power and even carried a trampoline and metal shed and wrapped them around a light pole the street over from me! I’ve lived in Oklahoma almost my entire life, aside from the time I was in LA, so I’m sort of used to this but I’ve never had one actually “hit home”. Every power line, stop sign, and light pole was seriously bent in half… It was insane! Needless to say, I didn’t have power for a while after that.

It was even crazier because a few nights later there was a hailstorm with hailstones the size of softballs! So yeah, that did some damage too. Having storms almost daily means lighting and random power outages so I haven’t even had my computers on for fear of damage to them if lightning blows the power out again. I think I get a break from weather tomorrow at least, so I’ll be hard at work on the blog then!

If the bad weather takes a break this evening, you all will be seeing a Viva Glam Lipglass post 🙂 For now, it’s time to turn off the computer since there’s another tornado warning lol… I think I jinxed myself by sitting down to write this post!
Thanks for reading!

Lesley

Hey everyone! I just wanted to make a quick post and say thank you to all the new people following my blog, and to all of my old followers who I see liking my recent posts, despite the fact that I disappeared for a while! I noticed that my blog has been getting a LOT more reads lately and I appreciate that SO very much! Nothing makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside quite like waking up to see that I already have like a bazillion views on a new post that I made the night before 🙂

I am afraid that you will be stuck with me from here on out, so I hope that’s alright! Unless I go on some crazy vacation sometime (which will pretty much never happen), I’m back to stay now that I’m all nice and settled in back in Oklahoma! My puppy is growing up enough that I actually have time to sit down in front of a computer more often now too, so that’s making my life as a makeup blogger much easier!

I’m not really sticking with a set day of the week for posts, but I’ll be making them every other day to twice a week… It just depends on my schedule. I’ve discovered how much more fun it is to do this blog now that I’m not pressuring myself so much to get a certain thing done on a certain day! It seems like every time I make a schedule to post something specific, some real life emergency comes up and I end up feeling SO bad that I didn’t post something when I said I would (thanks, OCD). I’m thinking that on the weekends, I’ll be doing a post or two for products that are new or really popular at the moment, or a grouped product post (like several lipsticks at once from the same collection)… Other than that, posts will mostly be broken down to ONE color of ONE product at a time. That way, it’s not as time consuming for me overall, but I’ll also be able to go more in depth with that review and not feel the need to rush through it to make some GIANT post in one afternoon! I feel like that will work out for the best, and will also give you all more posts to read more often!

I will definitely try to keep up with new products and launches, but I don’t have the funds for EVERY single item from a MAC collection and things like that any longer, since I do pay for everything on this blog out of pocket. You’ll also be seeing more drug store brands like Milani, NYX, and Revlon, because I understand that not everyone has the spare money to go out and buy a $30 blush or $50 foundation and I don’t want to be one of those bloggers who seems like an elitist makeup snob, because I’m not! Makeup is makeup and if it’s great stuff, I want to share that with all of you, regardless of the label or price tag!

In other news, I recently got a camera suitable for vlogging as well as a ring light, so you’ll get to see my face and hear me rambling about product reviews and tutorials on YouTube soon! Now that I’ll have an awesome lighting setup, I’ll also be posting pictures of my own makeup looks on here more often, like a MOTD/FOTD/whatever you want to call it.

I hope all of that’s cool with you guys! If there’s any questions, suggestions, or things you’d like to see more of on here PLEASE tell me in the comments! I created this blog to share my love of makeup with the world, so what you all think means a lot to me!

XOXO,

Lesley

I get asked a lot of questions, whether it’s through comments here on my blog, through emails, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and in person sooooo I think it’s time I answer all of them on here! It’s hard for me to respond thoroughly to everyone individually sometimes so hopefully I can cover everything in this post. If there’s anything else you want to know, leave a comment on this post and I’ll add it to the list!!

1)   Are you a “real” makeup artist?

Yes! I do freelance work for weddings, events, photos, personal lessons, etc. I’m also an Artist for MAC Cosmetics.

2)   When did you start doing makeup?

I was in high school when I really became interested in makeup, so that would be about 15 years ago? Something like that anyway.

3)   How old are you?

Since I was in high school about 15 years ago… Old. Okay so I’m not THAT old yet, I’m 31 (which looks a lot older when I type it)!

4)   How did you get started doing makeup?

Long story short… I went through an ugly duckling phase as a teenager so my mom was nice enough to take me to a makeup counter so I could get some concealer/powder/lipgloss/whatever. After that I fell in love with makeup because it made me feel so much better about myself. Fast forward a few years… I was COMPLETELY obsessed and started practicing looks from magazines and stuff on myself, family, and friends. I did makeup for my cousin’s prom. I helped out friends when they had events to go to or were getting their photos taken. I did work with photographer friends… I basically took every opportunity possible to do makeup on other people.

5)   What made you want to do makeup as a job?

It’s fun. It’s something that’s always changing and I get to help people feel better about themselves and look their best. It’s really rewarding for me to teach people how to emphasize the things they like about their face and hide the things that they don’t love. I think that everyone should feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. Sounds cheesy, I know, but it’s the truth! Oh! Also, I got my paws on the books Making Faces and Face Forward by the late and great Kevyn Aucoin… His natural talent and passion were things I saw in myself and I from that moment forward, I knew that I had to follow my dreams and make a career out of doing what I love. Discovering MAC also made me want to become a MAC Artist because the Artists at the counter back home were just badasses and they really inspired me!

6)   Did you go to school for makeup? Where did you learn?

To begin with, I was self-taught. The first 5 or so years that I did makeup, I just practiced on myself and other people. I used to hang out at the MAC counter back home and got to know the artists there, who ended up teaching me some really valuable things that still help me out to this day! YouTube was also a really valuable tool for me to learn a lot about different brands and techniques… Eventually I decided that I didn’t want to be stuck doing makeup just for weddings/proms/senior pictures and I hopped on a plane to Los Angeles to check out Makeup Designory (MUD). I ended up moving out here and completing the Fashion program at MUD so I could fine tune some techniques and learn more about the industry… So yeah here I am today, living my dream!

7)   What inspires you?

All sorts of things, really… Other artists, of course, like looks I see on Instagram or YouTube, work I see done by artists I work with, fashion and trends, nature, my mood, music… A little bit of everything!

8)   Do your family/boyfriend/friends support your decision to become a makeup artist instead of going to school and doing something else?

They do! I’m surrounded by wonderful people who also do what they love for a living, so I have a great support system… Everyone understands that I’m a creative person and they get that this is my outlet and my passion as well as my job. They don’t just support me either… They all push me to better myself and be even more awesome and never stop progressing, so I’m super thankful for that!

9)   Did you go to college?

I did… I went to a community college and majored in two different things because I couldn’t make up my mind. I tried both Psychology and Biology. I loved them both but I didn’t finish and get a degree in either… I’m only a few credit hours away but I decided to attend MUD and move out to Los Angeles, which basically used up the rest of my college fund. No regrets at all, though! Best decision I ever made!

10)   What would you do if you weren’t a makeup artist?

I would most likely go back to school and work towards a degree in zoology or entomology. I love animals and bugs so it would be fun to work with them and do field research to help with conservation.

11)  Where are you from?

Norman, Oklahoma born and raised! I now live in Manhattan Beach, just south of Los Angeles.

12)   Do you do any special effects makeup?

I know how, but I don’t do much of it any more. I learned how to do basic character makeup and apply prosthetics and do old age makeup, beards, etc at MUD but it’s not something that comes up with most of the work I do these days. It’s fun to do at times, but I definitely prefer making people pretty!

13)   What else are you into?

You probably don’t want to know lol… I really love animals and nature. I have a ton of pets, most of which being creepy crawlies… My boyfriend and I have a bunch of snakes, geckos, tarantulas, scorpions, a tortoise, and a really sweet, adorable boxer who is more like a child to me than a dog. I love going on hikes and looking for wildlife too. A few more “normal” things I’m into are hoarding clothes and shoes, photography, fishing (which I need to do more of), cooking & baking, reading, writing, and video games… I’m a total nerd. I’m getting more and more into collecting orchids too, thanks to the boyfriend and his nerdiness. Sorry babe, your secret is out!

14)   Why do you review so much MAC makeup?

Well, I don’t just go buy products to review for the hell of it… If I review something, it’s because I got it for myself or for my kit. Most happens to be MAC because I’ve always used and preferred that brand, even before I started working there.

15)   Do you get paid to review products or get free products to review?

Nope! Anything I review is something I’ve spent my own money on. If I did get free stuff, I wouldn’t hype something up, or even necessarily review it if I wasn’t even into it to begin with . So don’t fear, nothing on here will ever be anything but my own, honest opinion about the products I review!

16)   How do you get a job at MAC?

Well, you apply first! Take in a resume, look your best (in all black), and let your personality shine through!

17)   What is your favorite type of makeup to do?

Beauty/glamour I suppose… Yes, that whole “Kim K” kind of look. It’s just fun to look that gorgeous or to make someone else up to look damn sexy! I like to be creative too and do looks that aren’t necessarily the norm for beauty makeup. I like some of my work to be different and unique and really stand out.

18)   Why the name “lesleyrocksface”?

My name is Lesley. I rock, and I rock at beating face… So somehow that transformed into lesleyrocksface. I thought it was cute and I guess it just stuck!

19)   Why don’t you post looks on yourself?

Honestly, because I’ve gone through a super insecure phase over the past few years. Yep, I’m a typical girl when it comes to that kind of thing! I am starting to feel more confident though, and I want to share my looks with everyone, so you can count on seeing a lot more of those soon! I’m most likely to post them on my makeup Ingstagram account, which is @lesleymarshallmua, so go follow me on there!

20)   Do you have a YouTube channel?

Technically, yes, I do, it’s just not being used yet! I am planning on doing tutorials and reviews on there soon. I’ll make a post when I get it up and running!

21)   What are your favorite brands of makeup/cosmetics?

I love MAC (duh), Make Up For Ever, NARS, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Too Faced, Urban Decay, Melt, Guerlain, Deborah Lippmann (for nails), and La Mer (for skincare).

22)   What are the top 5 products you can’t live without?

Only 5?! Oh gosh this is tough… MAC Face & Body Foundation, La Mer Creme de la Mer moisturizer, MAC Fast Response Eye Cream, MAC Prep + Prime Moisture Infusion, MAC Invisible Set Powder… Perfect skin is a must for me!

23)   Why don’t you post as often as you used to?

I’ve been busy! I was promoted from a freelance/on call artist for MAC to a permanent Artist soooo between work and real life stuff like taking care of all my pets and finding some me time to relax, I don’t have as much time to blog as I used to. I’m going to try to make at least a post a week, though… Don’t give up me me just yet haha!

24)   Can you help me find the right foundation/blush/lipstick?

Via my blog/email/facebook/whatever? No, probably not. It’s best to go to your local MAC or other makeup counter or store and get a personal consultation with an artist there. It’s just too hard to fully analyze a face via the internet. Sorry!

25)   Can you do my makeup?

If you live in the Los Angeles area and want to pay me, yes, of course I can! As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I do freelance work, so if you need a makeup artist, you can check out my website: www.lesleymarshall.com and contact me from there to set up something!

Wow, that took longer than I thought… I hope I covered most everything that my readers, followers, and friends have asked me! If you wanna know more, ask away in the comments section below 🙂

I know it happens from time to time… I go MIA and return in full force with all the latest MAC collections… Well it’s true I’ve been MIA… Unfortunately I have had all of the newest MAC collections, photographed them and everything and planned on posting them but it all sort of fell through.

Recently my life has become extremely busy between working nearly full time and taking care of my terminally ill dog… My dog is my baby, she comes first and her cancer treatment comes first, so rather than spending my days off blogging, many have been spent at vets and specialists. I’m not looking for sympathy or a coming up with a cop-out, I’m just being honest. On the plus side, my big slobber monster (she’s a bullmastiff), Ava, is quite a trooper! She’s handling chemotherapy for her Mast Cell tumors pretty well and we’re expecting to have a bit of quality time left with her before she can’t handle any more or the cancer takes over and spreads further than her spleen. My boxer, Oliver, was also diagnosed within a week of Ava’s diagnosis, so that was rough too… Fortunately he only had one tumor that was easily removed and is now living cancer free and healthy as ever!

I love makeup… Cosmetics and makeup artistry are my passion and hobby and a huge part of my life. I feel like I need to get back to blogging to retain my sanity, so hopefully I’ll be able to keep up with it more easily from now on!

I am SO far behind with collections, so I’ll be posting them from oldest to newest… You can look forward to seeing posts on these MAC collections coming up over the next few days:

– Marilyn Monroe

– Temperature Rising

– Rihanna (all 3 lipsticks)

– All About Orange

– Tropical Taboo

and the latest…

– So Supreme

Again, thank you for your support and reading my blog.

XO,

Lesley

Apologies for being MIA for the past month or so… I have been working on some other things with work and in my personal life. Fortunately, I’m feeling more focused than ever now, so it’s time to get this going again!

There is some cool stuff coming up on the blog this week, though! I’ll be reviewing the majority of MAC’s Styleseeker collection, as well as Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash Mascara, and all of the new Cremesheen + Pearl Lipsticks and Lipglasses.

As well as MAC, I have two drugstore cosmetics reviews coming up too! I’ll be reviewing Maybelline’s Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Eye Shadows and Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains.

I promise things will be back on track very soon! Thanks for reading!
